The birth of a Giant Anteater in the Santa Barbara Zoo

Sunday, September 28th, 1997, the Zoo welcomed a baby giant anteater into the world.

This is the fifth birth for the mother anteater and the eleventh giant anteater birth at the Zoo. That baby anteater weighs approximately 3/4lb. and is approximately 12 inches long. The anteater will grow to be between 120-180 lbs. in adulthood. The giant anteater is native to northern Argentina and southern Belize.

"Every birth is as exciting as the first," said Julia Parker, Animal Care Supervisor and resident anteater specialist.

The mother carries the baby on its back. The stripes on the mother and baby blend together to make the appearance of one large anteater. These markings offer protective camouflage from predators in the wild. Mother and baby anteater are on exhibit on a limited basis daily.

This birth continues the Zoo's success in the national breeding program.
